Playing in the Primera División early in a player’s career isn’t a must, as the likes of Janio Posito, Sandro Rengifo and Juan Pablo Vergara have proven that you can carve out a solid career in the second tier before getting a move to a club in the top flight.
Cristhian Vargas is perhaps the next in line to give it a go.
From the depths of Piura, Vargas was born in Sullana and is very much an Alianza Atletico lad. He started his professional career at the club and played at San Pedro Chanel de Sullana as a youth player.
At 23 years old, Vargas’s potential is fading away, but he is very much maturing in time and is showing that he could make a comeback to the Primera after not doing so well in his first stint.
Vargas is primarily a right-sided central midfielder or a right winger. His style is simply to run at the defence and intimidate them. In the middle, he’s a box-to-box midfielder that is very dynamic and helps the entire team click, in a similar style to Marcio Valverde from Huancayo, and also an ex-Alianza Atletico man.
On the wing, Vargas is an inside forward and will cut into the box to either finish with his right foot, or make a pass depending on what is more ideal.
A lot of his plays are similar to his goal versus Juan Aurich, where he easily beats the entire team from one box to another due to his great dribbling ability and agility. Vargas is able to outrun his marker, especially those who have slow anticipation.
Vargas is also a decent finisher and that is shown by the six goals he has so far in the league. He finishes with his right and often does it from the right side of the box, depending on if he’s playing around in midfield or the wing.
Right now, Vargas has formed a good partnership with Jair Cordova, who is the top scorer in the Segunda División with 20 goals, eight more than the second-place Miguel Curiel. Both Cordova and Vargas have 26 goals between them and have really added to this Churres team after a poor start to the season.
Despite beginning to age for a “young player,” Vargas is someone who can really shine in the Primera if given a proper chance, just like Juan Pablo Vergara after he played for many years in the Segunda. Perhaps Vargas could even play for Alianza Atletico in the top flight should they get promoted.
Regardless, he is one to follow and we will be keen to see what happens next in his career.
